Good Self-Image Matters

Poem: Prayer for Self-Image

Help me to
find identity in you
understand my worth
value your standards
recognize my unique qualities
designed by you
Yah, to you I pray

Help me to
appreciate me
see myself the way you see me
understand that you Lord
fashioned me too a little lower than the angels
view you as my author and designer
Yah, before you these things I lay

Help me to
see you crowned me with glory and honor too
know you made me to have dominion over the creation as well
understand you put all things under my feet to boot
ask you to quiet the voice that whispers otherwise
seek your satisfaction and yours alone
Yah, I utter your praise today

Help me to
hear your voice
taste your perfection
realize you will make my life successful
comprehend I have no power
perceive all power is yours, Elohim
Yah, give me ears to say

Good Self-Image Matters

Contributed by Morah Michal Chiyim

For women, having a positive self-image is crucial since it directly affects mental health, setting boundaries, and general life happiness. It gives women the confidence to take on leadership roles, fight for their professions, and overcome societal constraints without being constrained by self-doubt or perfectionism. Proverbs 3:25-26 – “Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.”

Why a Good Self-Image Matters

  • Mental Health & Resilience: The main defense against mental health issues like sadness and anxiety is a positive self-concept. It increases resilience, which enables women to overcome obstacles and manage everyday stress more skillfully.
  • Assertiveness & Boundary Setting: Women are often culturally conditioned to put others’ needs before their own. Valuing yourself makes it easier to establish and honor firm boundaries, protecting your mental and emotional energy.
  • Career Advancement:   Strong self-esteem and confidence empower women to speak up in male-dominated settings, demand higher pay, and pursue leadership positions that might otherwise seem unattainable.
  • Health & Lifestyle Choices:  A healthy self-image helps detach self-worth from unhealthy and unrealistic societal expectations and unattainable social media standards, freeing up mental energy for creativity and meaningful connections and attainable personal standards.

Together, the foundational pillars competence, confidence, and connection help to create a balanced framework for understanding and building healthy self-worth.  Competence is the capacity to manage activities and obstacles successfully. It grows as you gain abilities, develop problem-solving techniques, and accomplish objectives. Developing competence bases your sense of value on observable skills and prior achievements. Competence comes from your ability to feel confident in God. Hebrews 4:16 – “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Confidence is trusting in your own capabilities. Believing that you can manage whatever life throws at you and having faith in your own talents are key components of confidence. It is the conviction that you can overcome obstacles and adjust to unpredictability. Hebrews 10:35 ,  “Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.”  In wholesome, encouraging connections with others, connection is the sense of value and belonging. It offers the emotional stability needed to confront the outer world without being fixated on perfection.

The power of self-image for Women and its definition is the very reason why it matters. self-image plays a critical role in mental health and overall well-being. Women who believe in themselves are better equipped to handle stress, manage anxiety, and overcome setbacks. They are better able to choose that things that are of HIM over him. Psalms 146:3 states,  “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.”

In reference to Acts 5: 1-11, when women have a good self-image, they are least likely to fall into the same mindset as Sapphira. Isaiah 30:15 – “For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength…”
